There are several charming churches that are located
in Portaria that are well worth visiting if you have the chance.
The 13th century Monastery of "Panayias of Portareas"
is one of the most impressive and important, and is where the village
took it's name from.
The main square of Portaria, where you will find "Alvion Rooms
and Restaurants" is the centre of the village, and a place
where you can enjoy a coffee or drink under the shade of the huge
plane trees that dominate the square, and which create a very peaceful
and relaxing environment. |
During the summer months, various festivals take place in Portaria,
to which everyone is welcome to attend. Several dance festivals
take place between May to August, and here you can enjoy music and
dance from all over the world. A revival of a traditional Pelion
wedding also takes palce each August, and this is well worth attending
if you have the chance, where you can enjoy a very authentic and
unique experience.
Portaria is an ideal base from which you can visit some of the other
neighbouring towns and villages such as the famous village of Makrinitsa,
which is just 2km. For those travelling by car, you can explore
all of the other regions of Pelion, and experience the magic, charm
and natural beauty that attract huge numbers of visitors to this
remarkable region of Greece each year.
